- Entrepreneurship and small businesses can be driving forces in regional development. Rural areas face specific barriers such as long transport distances or a lack of skilled labor compared to urban environments. The thesis aims to understand how local entrepreneurship is expressed in a rural context. Based on a case study of the municipality of Simrishamn in the south of Sweden, the work has three research questions:
- How does local entrepreneurship manifest itself in the municipality of Simrishamn?
- How does the municipality work to encourage local entrepreneurship?
- Does digitalization help to promote entrepreneurship in the municipality of Simrishamn?

The thesis is based on theories of networks, embeddedness, digitalization, and entrepreneurship and the empirical data consists of a survey aimed at small business owners in Simrishamn municipality and a semi-structured interview with a business developer employed by the municipality of Simrishamn.
The results and analysis show that the local networks are perceived to be anchored both by the municipality and by the entrepreneurs. This is supported by the municipality's commitment to promoting networking between entrepreneurs. Furthermore, digitalization appears to be well-integrated into local business life according to the interviewee and the survey answers. (Less)
