The aim of this study was to investigate how female authors of autobiographies from the 2010s experience and describe their own turning points and what has contributed to their recovery from a self-perceived eating disorder in a Swedish context. We found that the importance of close individuals has played a central role in the recovery process. However, relatives could also have a negative impact on the individual and contribute to a negative body image. Furthermore, the study shows that professional healthcare contacts played a significant role, both in identifying signs of eating disorders and starting treatment, but also through conversational support. Nonetheless in this study, adequate knowledge among professionals has been found to be an important aspect. Finally, a recurring theme in the study has been the ability to find oneself again and to create a new identity beyond the eating disorder problem. (Less)
