- Previous research shows that it is a complicated task to assess whether children are harmed or not and when children have autism spectrum disorder (ASD), it can be even more complicated. The aim of this study was to increase the understanding of challenges in assessments of children with ASD and their parents experienced by professional child welfare social workers. Qualitative semi-structured interviews have been conducted with six different social workers, from three different municipalities. The social workers have been interviewed about general challenges, challenges in assessing children's needs when the children have ASD, and challenges in assessing parents’ ability to meet the needs when the children have ASD. The empirical data has been analyzed through thematic analysis and based on Drury Hudsons' theory of professional knowledge in social work, Kahneman’s definition of intuitive and analytical thinking, and Lipsky’s concept of street-level bureaucrats. The results showed that the social workers mainly feel that insufficient knowledge about ASD is a challenge in assessments of children's needs and parents' ability to meet the needs when the children have ASD. Furthermore, it has emerged that organizational factors can be a challenge in assessments of children with ASD and that the social workers experience that their assessments are influenced by lack of time, finances, and by other organizations.
