Abstract
The aim of the present study was to examine the coparenting relationship and its role in parental caregiving representations as seen in mothers with autistic children, as well as gender roles in these families based on mothers’ perspectives. Data collection was carried out with Parental Attachment and Caregiving Interview (P-CAI) and the self-report measure Coparenting Relationship Scale (CRS). Eleven mothers with autistic children participated. Directed content analysis illustrated five main themes. Three themes reflected certain differences between mothers’ and fathers’ parental roles. One theme portrayed differences in conditions regarding coparenting in these families in terms of a divided family system and a sense of separateness from... (More)

One theme portrayed differences in conditions regarding coparenting in these families in terms of a divided family system and a sense of separateness from the surrounding world. The last theme illustrated individual systematic patterns in how thoughts and feelings related to parenthood and perceived quality of the coparenting relationship covary. These themes exhibit the central role of coparenting in families with autistic children and point to a need for support to these families, aimed to facilitate role flexibility and enhance the coparenting collaboration, thus strengthening the conditions for children’s development of secure attachments. The evidence of experienced isolation calls for consideration, within health care services, of the social context in which these families exist because of the specific challenges they face. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
