Abstract
In 2020 an article was published about rough sex among youth. The article spread on social media and was the beginning of a debate in Swedish media that came to be known as the “rough sex debate”. The aim of this study is to achieve a greater understanding of the phenomenon of “rough sex” among youth. To achieve this aim, we analyze and highlight the discursive differences in the debate on “rough sex” among youth and distinguish patterns that can help us to understand young people's use of rough sex. The method used in this study has been critical discourse analysis. The theories that have been used are sex radical feminism, radical feminism, and Gagnon and Simon’s sexual script theory. The theories have been used to deconstruct and... (More)

The theories have been used to deconstruct and analyze our empiricism which includes news articles and public statements. Conclusions from our study include that we have noted two discourses that are central to how the topic of rough sex among youth has been discussed. The first is the rough sex problematizing discourse and the second is the sex-positive discourse. Other discursive themes found in the debate include norms and pornography. This study showed that despite the differences between the discourse’s view of “hard sex among youth” they agreed that there have to be more conversations with young people about sexual health. The study also showed that the attraction to rough sex among youth can be explained through the sexual script theory and the maintenance of sexual norms. (Less)
