- Abstract (Swedish)
(Less) - Abstract

Aim: To map research related to experiences of meaningful activities among asylum seekers and refugees awaiting decision for asylum in the host country.
Method: A general literature study of 13 articles. Databases used were CINAHL, PubMed and PsycINFO. A deductive approach was used in the analyse based on the occupational dimensions of doing, being, belonging and becoming.
Findings: The 13 articles studied showed that lack of participation in meaningful occupations led to loss of self-determination, increased dependency and loss in human value. The participants experienced many difficulties, such as hostile welcoming, major cultural adaptations, language barriers, isolation, uncertainty and an inability to plan for the future. Sociocultural environment and policies influenced participants' experiences to a large extent in both negative and positive ways.
Conclusion: New findings from the study can be used in occupational therapy interventions. Further research is needed within this area in order to set up interventions adapted to the needs and wishes of refugees. (Less)
