- Abstract
- Although a significant source of greenhouse gases, healthcare operations are a rare topic among climate change reductions. Using the case of the Stockholm Region, this study explores opportunities and challenges associated with the governance of healthcare transitions to minimize climate change emissions and promote sustainability. A qualitative case study was conducted with foursemi-structured interviews with officials from the regional government and non-governmental organizations. By applying multi-level perspectives on sustainability transitions, the thesis addresses three questions: (1) How does the Stockholm Region perceive and manage its healthcare-related climate change impact? (2) What challenges and opportunities does the... (More)

By applying multi-level perspectives on sustainability transitions, the thesis addresses three questions: (1) How does the Stockholm Region perceive and manage its healthcare-related climate change impact? (2) What challenges and opportunities does the Stockholm Region have regarding reducing its climate change impact? (3) How are practices and technologies governed at Karolinska University Hospital to tackle its climate change impact? Governing challenges are multifaceted, involving multiple actors in the regional healthcare context
to foster sustainability transitions. A flexible approach governs different actors and sustainability intervention areas. Innovative technologies and practices facilitate changes in healthcare, such as telemedicine or circularity. As shown by the example of the Karolinska University Hospital, innovative technologies require a comprehensive restructuring of healthcare systems. Further research is needed to remove barriers to niche technology cultivation to accelerate climate change solutions in healthcare. (Less)
