- Abstract
- The intention of this paper is to investigate the interpretation process of the so called sunstones from Rispebjerg and Vasagård on Bornholm, what arguments are used to support the conclusions and are they well-founded. It is a literary study using discourse theory and argumentation analysis.
Rispebjerg and Vasagård are two sites situated on distinctive places in the landscape and were inhabited from around 4000 BC to 1700 BC. Archaeologists have identified circular enclosures, of Sarup I- and Vasagård type, circular buildings, and several artefacts related to ritual practices. The sunstones are dated to around 2900–2700 BC during which the Funnel Beaker culture occupied the two sites.

In the initial part of the paper, I describe the ornamented slate- and sandstones and the contexts in which they are found. There after I present an analysis of the arguments used in seven texts published between 2014–2018. The result of the study shows that the sunstones are central to the interpretation of a neolithic sun cult at Rispebjerg and Vasagård. The arguments used to support this theory are successful at convincing the reader of the stones ritual meaning and relation to the sun. However, the evidence for a specific neolithic sun cult is somewhat less convincing. (Less)
