Abstract
In this thesis, I explore the health risk communication formulated during the COVID-19 pandemic in Tanzania by identifying it and discussing it in relation to prominent frameworks in health risk communication. To gain knowledge, the data is collected through semistructured interviews with the National Coordinators in health risk communication from the Ministry of Health (MoH) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Tanzania.
But also, through documents on the National COVID-19 Strategy on health risk

communication and COVID-19 situation reports by the MoH. The purpose in this study is not to investigate an objective reality or truth, but instead gain insight on the COVID-19 health risk communication in Tanzania. The knowledge has been constructed through my own understanding from the perspective of social constructionism where the data has been analyzed via a qualitative content analysis using the Corbin and Strauss’ open, axial, and selective steps of coding to create 7 overarching categories. The extracted codes constructs my understanding of COVID-19 health risk communication in Tanzania, to gain a deeper
understanding, the identified health risk communication is discussed in relation to two prominent health risk communication frameworks, the Crisis and Emergency Risk and Communication framework (CERC) and the COVID-19 Risk Communication and
Community Engagement strategy (RCCE).There is a research gap in health risk communication on non-western countries and a weakness in global considerations in the available frameworks. This study is one of few that explores health risk communication during a public health emergency in a non-western country. It contributes with knowledge on factors that are necessary for the development of
inclusive frameworks on health risk communication, such as social and cultural factors. A limitation to the study is the lack of material, however the data that is collected consists of the most relevant and available information on health risk communication during the COVID-19 pandemic in Tanzania.
