The research question for this essay is: How is the EU portrayed in Swedish news media? This research question is relevant because the news that the population in Sweden is exposed to can influence the general perception of the EU. Previous research has been conducted on how the media covers the EU, but not specifically on how Swedish media frame the EU and describe the institution discursively. The essay will proceed in two steps: first, by analyzing articles about the EU from two Swedish media outlets through a quantitative content analysis, and then by conducting a discourse analysis of the content. To explain the content of the articles, framing theory and agenda-setting theory will be employed. The essay reveals that Swedish media primarily write about EU news from the perspective of Swedish actors, namely Swedish parties and politicians. The majority of the articles also framing the news in a conflict framing and responsibility framing. (Less)
