Abstract
The Social democrats have traditionally been against joining alliances, and specifically Nato, to retain Sweden's neutrality. After Russia's invasion of Ukraine in the beginning of 2022 the social democrats made a drastic turn and decided to apply for membership in Nato. This study will explore how the Social democrats opinion about Nato has changed between 2014-2022. A discourse analysis will be used to examine both interpellation debates and rapports from the defense committee. The main analytic tool that is used is questions based on “what is the problem represented to be”. To explain the Social democrats actions theories about alliance freedom, military cooperation strategies and securitisation will be applied. In the analysis... (More)

To explain the Social democrats actions theories about alliance freedom, military cooperation strategies and securitisation will be applied. In the analysis citations from the Social Democrats ministers are analysed. The results show that the Social democrats have gotten a more positive view on Nato and have deepened their cooperation through enhanced operative partnership and host nation support. The view on Nato membership seems to not have changed in the time period and material I analysed. To summarise, maybe the Social democrats changed their view on NATO membership after Russia's invasion of Ukraine but that their overall view on NATO changed before then. (Less)
