Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to explore potential changes in two different Nordic industries’ approaches to CSR-related issues during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Theoretical Perspective: The theoretical framework is built upon stakeholder theory, shareholder theory, and institutional theory. This is further complemented by context-laying research on the history of CSR as well as existing trends during the time period.
Methodology: To fulfill the purpose of the study a qualitative approach consisting of a multiple case study was conducted, in addition to desk research. Interviews were conducted with representatives of the case companies, and this was further complemented with collected data from published company reports.
Empirical Foundation: Nine interviews were conducted with representatives from six different companies, operating within the grocery retail industry or the hospitality industry.
Conclusion: The thesis concludes that the COVID19-pandemic can be seen to have affected parts of Nordic companies’ approaches to CSR-related matters, in various ways and to different extent, and that these changes do differ depending on the industry. As such, the financial development of each industry has been shown to affect companies' opportunities to invest in CSR initiatives. Furthermore, a reprioritization of CSR initiatives has been observed, as well as new CSR initiatives as direct consequences of the pandemic. In addition, some CSR initiatives have been found temporarily paused or permanently terminated. (Less)
