Abstract
Despite the enormous and ever-increasing amount of photographs, and their importance as historical source material, Sweden has never had any national plan for the preservation of this cultural heritage. And there is not longer any public institution, or institutions, that has a central and advisory role in regards to photography in general. The aim of this thesis is to contribute to the knowledge of how Swedish public memory institutions work with the preservation and accessibility of analogue and digital photographic materials. The aim is also to gain knowledge of what they think about the state of photography in Sweden in general, especially in relation to the lack of a national preservation plan and central photographic public... The aim is also to gain knowledge of what they think about the state of photography in Sweden in general, especially in relation to the lack of a national preservation plan and central photographic public institution. This is investigated through a questionnaire survey among Swedish public ALM-institutions. In order to be able to analyse and draw conclusions from the result of this survey, and to be able to place them in a historical context, a close reading of relevant government reports dating back to the 1950’s has been carried out. In relation to the survey result these reports led to the understanding that many of the aspects that are seen as problems and challenges today has been issues for decades. While these issues are still not solved the issues of handling, collecting and storing digitally born photographs keeps on increasing. The result of the survey, which 208 institutions respondend to, indicate among other things that storage conditions are still substandard in many cases, digitization of analogue photography is slowly moving forward and that the handling of photographs vary substantially between institutions. The vast majority sees the need for skills enhancement, increased economic resources, more collaborations and national coordination, especially in regards to metadata and digital storage formats. Most respondents also state that in order to improve the conditions for the photographic cultural heritage in general there is a need for a national preservation plan and handling strategy for photography.
