The purpose of this essay is thereby to bring light to the discourse about greenery in the planning process of the dense city. Critical discourse analysis is used to analyze the space given to greenery in planning documents describing the development of Nyhamnen in Malmö. Nyhamnen is a part of the city that is supposed to achieve the vision of a sustainable future by being both dense and green. By critically examining planning documents about the sustainable city, the discourse about the green city is brought to light. The idea of the green city as shown in the planning documents of Nyhamnen paints a vision that makes the greenery always present while it serves several different functions and values. By analyzing the planning documents from different spatial dimensions, it shows that greenery tends to have a larger presence in the description of how it will be experienced, compared to how it actually will be implemented. Even though Nyhamnen cannot currently be experienced as a physical place, the planning documents play a crucial role in creating a vision of a future green city by how it describes and prioritizes green space within the urban environment.
