Abstract
This study explores the dynamics between the student union and programme associations at Lund University's Faculty of Social Sciences. Examining the perspectives of programme association representatives on the union and themselves, it investigates the union's challenges, the political tensions between the organisations and the way in which they may serve as a microcosm reflecting broader societal patterns. Very little research has been done on student unions previously so this study aims to contribute to that area of study as well as to the study of political anthropology. The data was collected through 13 interviews with participants from the different organisations and interpreted through a theoretical framework that includes new public management, logic of influence/membership, social capital and political fragmentation. The study shows that the union has been professionalised through the logic of influence and is governed with a NPM approach, leading to a loss of contact with the students they represent. Representatives of the union as well as a few of the representatives from programme associations perceive the work of the union to be lacking and would like to solve this by allowing programme associations to be involved in the work of representing students to a greater extent. Collaborations with programme associations is also a part of the union’s strategic plan. Whether this would lead to greater decentralisation and therefore greater civic engagement among students and more efficient governance (in accordance with Putnam's theory) or to a fragmented political structure with even more inefficient democratic processes, depends entirely on how such a change is implemented.
