Abstract
The aim of this study was to understand the link between the theoretical knowledge gained during the previous four semesters and its practical application; this is due to the different ways in which we used the knowledge and the experience that came with it. But how can social work students effectively draw on different sources of knowledge during their internship, including experiences from previous work, supervision, theoretical knowledge, and collaboration with other professional groups, to become professional social workers? From an epistemological perspective, we are interested in how theories were implemented and tested in a practical context. Our central concepts were sources of knowledge and forms of knowledge. We chose to conduct interviews because we wanted to understand the practical application of theory, which is to be done by examining the experiences of social work students during their internships. Our theoretical starting points were knowledge theory and Aristoteles’ epistemological reflections. We concluded that students did make practical use of their theoretical knowledge during their internships. Most useful were skills established in the law courses. Other important sources of knowledge were their tacit knowledge, as well as a little experience-based during the internship. In addition, the supervision of mentors and interaction with others were important sources of knowledge for students during their internships. In the study, we also addressed how the pandemic affected the formation of knowledge. (Less)
