Abstract
Due to the civil war in Syria, around 6 million people were displaced to neighboring countries
and more than half of them live in Turkiye in a protracted refugee situation. Considering lack of
return options to Syria and low resettlement quotas in third countries, their only viable option is
local integration in the host countries. Designed as a case study, this thesis examines how the
government of Turkiye‘s response towards Syrian influx shape the experiences of the Syrian

with regards to their integration. The research builds on qualitative methods, and the data is
collected through 15 qualitative semi-structured interviews during fieldwork in Yalova city in
Turkiye in early 2023. By looking at the precarious situations within the framework of
integration in the light of the policies implemented toward Syrians, this study concludes the
following: the integration policies of Turkiye as a host country turn out to be a multiplier of
precarity within the legal, economic, and social dimensions of integration, and there is an urgent
need for comprehensive long-term policies and a more institutionalized approach to Syrian
refugees‘ integration considering their protracted refugee situation. (Less)
