Abstract
The aim of our study was to increase the understanding of women's experiences of violence in close relationships with a special focus on emotional consequences for women. Our empirical data consisted of four autobiographies, which we analyzed through thematic content analysis. The results showed that the emotional consequences are worse than the physical. Emotional pains are for example captured as PTSD, trauma, and depression. We also found that the women feel worse after they left their partner, which means it's important to reach out to the women afterward to give them well-aligned support. All four women expressed descriptions that are compatible with the concept of a normalization process. We could see a consistent pattern of feeling... (More)

We also found that the women feel worse after they left their partner, which means it's important to reach out to the women afterward to give them well-aligned support. All four women expressed descriptions that are compatible with the concept of a normalization process. We could see a consistent pattern of feeling shame in all the stories. In our results, we conclude that shame leads to several different consequences, for example, that the women do not report, do not leave, or do not dare to seek help. Based on these women's stories of perceived violence, it has shown the importance of understanding the overall picture of the emotional consequences of violence through the lenses of the processes of normalization and break-up, as well as the concept of emotions.
