Abstract
There is a widely regarded issue in Sweden, where its residents are categorized based on both their racial- and foreign affiliation, which may contribute to an individual's social exclusion from society. The categorization is based on a social construction with two opposite poles, “Swedes” and “non-swedes”, which causes concern for individuals with a foreign background as they become victims of social exclusion based on their appearance. This study aims to investigate how people discuss race and are categorized based on appearance and characteristics, using the concepts of race and racialization. The study uses a qualitative method and semi-structured interviews to analyze experiences of racialization among individuals with foreign... (More)

The study uses a qualitative method and semi-structured interviews to analyze experiences of racialization among individuals with foreign backgrounds. The results show that individuals are categorized based on the fact that their phenotypical features and characteristics are given social meaning, which implies that they are deviant from Swedish society. Furthermore, the results show that respondents did not talk about race when they were younger, because they were protected from reality by their parents and because they lived in an immigrant-dense area. It was when they enrolled in upper secondary school that they encountered racial thinking. Additionally, the respondents stated that they ended up in an “in-betweenness”, where their belonging does not correspond to how others see them. In order to become part of Swedish society, the respondents needed to work twice as hard. (Less)
