- Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
- Abstract
- Despite Sweden being amongst the most gender equal countries in the world,
men's violence against women is a comprehensive societal issue with large
consequences: both considering financial costs to society and personal
suffering. The police have a crucial role in this issue. This thesis aims to
investigate attitudes amongst police students in Sweden towards different types
of violence, and if this correlates with the degree of sexism. Participants
consisted of 89 Swedish police students and 88 participants in a control group.
A survey measuring sexism and evaluations of four types of intimate partner
violence was distributed. The types of violence were physical, psychological,

A survey measuring sexism and evaluations of four types of intimate partner
violence was distributed. The types of violence were physical, psychological,
sexual, and economic. Results show a higher level of sexism amongst the
police students compared to the control group, as well as for men compared to
women. Participants in both groups viewed the situations described as severe,
and a negative correlation between the level of sexism and attitudes concerning
the severity was detected. The results concur with previous research regarding
gender differences in sexism along with the correlation of attitudes towards
violence and sexism. Additionally, it contributes new knowledge about the
sexism amongst Swedish police students as well as their beliefs about intimate
partner violence. Hopefully, this study aids in broadening the interest and
engagement regarding this topic of research. (Less)
