Abstract
The aim of this study was to explore adolescent girls’ relationships to their body through the concept of embodiment. Eleven female junior high school students aged 14-15 years old were interviewed about their experiences and perceived changes connected to their relationship with their body. The data was then analyzed in a reflexive thematic analysis resulting in three main themes with two subthemes each. The first theme was about awareness of being looked at by others, and to begin to see oneself through the gaze of others. The second theme concerned a separation between body and self, a view of the body as something possible to rule over and a sense of loss of control when that was not the case. The third theme revolved around... (More)

The third theme revolved around experiences of interplay between body and self, and a sense of being at one with one’s body. Results were interpreted as a display of the complexity of the girls’ relationships to their body, shaped by social context and often characterized by an outside perspective on the body. Possible implications of the participants’ relationships to their body are discussed. One possible outcome could be a preoccupation with the opinions of others, and attempts to shape others’ view of oneself. What might also have occured is an objectification of one’s body, making it difficult to detect the body’s needs and emotions from the inside. As the relationship to the body is so much more than only appearance and objective judgements, the multidimensional concept of embodiment is considered a fruitful way to explore the relationship further. Abstract (Swedish)
(More)
