Thesis question: How do small businesses attempt to adapt to remote work during various crises that they are faced with, by using different mechanisms to help facilitate a transition towards remote work, can the contingency theory be used to understand these mechanisms?
Purpose: To deepen the understanding of the mechanisms used by small businesses to adapt towards remote work during crises and to explore the applicability of the contingency theory in this context.
Method: Our research study was designed as a qualitative study. Four companies were chosen that experienced a shift towards remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, these companies were small businesses and located in Sweden. Through semi-structured interviews with decision-makers, including CEOs, a vice president and a business manager, empirical data was gathered on the mechanisms employed during the transition.
Theoretical perspective: The theoretical framework is based on previous research around small businesses and how they handle crisis situations, as well as the innovative tools they use to navigate it.
Result: The study identifies and presents three mechanisms that facilitates a transition to remote work during a crisis. These mechanisms are based on the responses obtained during the interviews. The
4
identified mechanisms are technology adoption, streamlining business activity and team building. Moreover, the mechanisms consists of 1st order category, 2nd order themes and an aggregate dimensions
Conclusion: The results show that the contingency theory can be used to understand what mechanisms small businesses use to facilitate a transition towards remote work. Furthermore, the conclusion has been drawn that these three mechanisms can be used to transition towards remote work, which are technology adoption, streamlining business activity and team building.
