Doing PAX Things: Swedish 3rd Grade Students’ Feelings and Attitudes Towards Participation in PAX Good Behavior Game

Abstract
PAX Good Behavior Game (PAX-GBG) is a school-based intervention which has been shown to increase student’s self-regulation, promote prosocial behaviors, and inhibit challenging behaviors. However, little is known about how participating students feel about the intervention. In this study, we conducted semi-structured interviews and surveys with 3rd grade students in Sweden to examine their feelings about and attitudes towards working with PAX-GBG. PAX Good Behavior Game (PAX-GBG) is a school-based intervention which has been shown to increase student’s self-regulation, promote prosocial behaviors, and inhibit challenging behaviors. However, little is known about how participating students feel about the intervention. In this study, we conducted semi-structured interviews and surveys with 3rd grade students in Sweden to examine their feelings about and attitudes towards working with PAX-GBG. Interview data was analyzed using thematic analysis, resulting in five themes: ‘enjoying our PAX-classroom’, ‘I can do this’, ‘it’s tough (sometimes)’, ‘making sense’, and ‘grease for the wheels’. Results from the survey indicated that participants had mostly positive feelings when participating in the activities of PAX-GBG. We conclude that participants had generally positive attitudes and feelings regarding the use of PAX-GBG in their classroom, indicating that the method is appreciated and well adjusted to its recipients. Additionally, many shared the perception that the intervention was helpful in promoting appropriate behaviors and inhibiting inappropriate behaviors in the classroom. This is in line with previous findings on the method’s effectiveness, suggesting that group-level impacts found in quantitative studies may also be noted by individual students. (Less)

Vi fann även att många delade uppfattningen att interventionen var behjälplig i att främja lämpliga beteenden och hämma olämpliga beteenden i klassrummet. Detta stämmer överens med tidigare forskningsfynd gällande metodens effektivitet, vilket tyder på att de effekter man tidigare funnit på gruppnivå i kvantitativa studier också kan märkas av individuella elever.
