Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)

Research question: How do managers view control? (and) How do managers describe that they practice control when working at the office respectively while working from home as a result of covid-19?

Research question: How do managers view control? (and) How do managers describe that they practice control when working at the office respectively while working from home as a result of covid-19?
Purpose of study: The study aims to contribute to an increased understanding of how control is exercised and expressed in organizations during both office work and working from home, based on a managerial perspective.
Methodology: To achieve the purpose of the study, a qualitative interview study with semi-structured interviews was conducted with eleven managers. The study adopts a social constructionist perspective and an abductive approach.
Theoretical perspectives: The study positions itself within the research field of control, with a focus on output control, unobtrusive control, and trust-based control. Furthermore, research on trust and control during working from home is also included. The study is put in the context of the covid-19-pandemic.
Result: The results of the empirical analysis indicate that control is viewed as something negative and something managers want to distance themselves from. However, the negative associations vary in extent depending on the underlying reason for the usage of control.
Conclusions: Despite the managers’ negative associations with control, it turns out that they nevertheless exercise control, but that they unconsciously explain the word control in other terms so that it is not perceived negatively. This happened both in the office and while working from home, but the phenomenon was made visible and the control became more intense while working from home due to the covid-19-pandemic. (Less)
