Abstract
Urban freight transportation is crucial for the functioning of a city and city life. However, the way urban freight transportation is occurring is unsustainable since there are few regulations and dangerous situations easily arise. The purpose of the thesis was to examine transportation in car-free areas and identify the associated problems, guidelines and explore potential solutions to the identified issues. A literature review was conducted to investigate relevant concepts and research within the subject. An interview study based on the literature was also carried out, involving municipal representatives, freight transportation companies and waste management companies. To complement the findings, an observation of a car-free area in Lund... (More)

An interview study based on the literature was also carried out, involving municipal representatives, freight transportation companies and waste management companies. To complement the findings, an observation of a car-free area in Lund was conducted. The results of the study indicated that during hours of delivery car-free areas often suffer from congestion and a high number of vehicles. Additionally, there was a risk to vulnerable road users when transportation occurred in their prioritized area. Waste management and transportation companies expressed a willingness to collaborate with the municipality to improve the situation. However, cooperation and communication were often lacking among the different stakeholders. The conclusion of the thesis was that there is a need for increased collaboration and review of transportation practices in car-free areas. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
