A Framework Analysis of the life experiences of highly engaged Swedish adolescents: A Salutogenic approach
(2023) PSPR14 20231Department of Psychology
- Abstract
- Contemporary research on mental health and well-being has addressed the need to deepen our understanding about the nature of adolescent life and contexts. Our research aim is to examine positive and negative experiences concerning school, family, friends, and leisure time in a sample of Swedish 13–19-year- olds. We use the framework method to organize data and approach the analysis by following Antonovsky’s salutogenic theory. Our findings show that adolescents experience stress about schoolwork, social ambiguities with peers and conflicts in family as salient challenges. Likewise, they experience leisure, social support and socialization with friends and family as salient resources. We conclude that potential secondary effects of enhanced... (More)

We conclude that potential secondary effects of enhanced meaningfulness in school are overshadowed by an overload in school workload. Our findings promote further research considering how salutogenesis can be useful in promoting health within adolescent settings. Based on our findings, school leaders should encourage adolescents’ skill developments beyond academic achievement and create more platforms for socializing and conversations regarding mental health. - Abstract (Swedish)

(Less)
