Abstract
“1000 Extra” is a project that takes off in the sub optimal conditions that city planning in the 20-th century has left behind for the future. First and foremost looking at the conditions of residential areas planned based on doctrines stemming in modernism, the project proposes desnsifying the not-so-dense areas in Lund, consisting of row houses and other residential buildings in the same category of density. While the discussion for quite some time has been going on about densifying these residential areas and mixing in possibilities for other activities seem to have been passed around for some time, it isn’t until the past decade or two that firm proposals, concerning both policy and design, has started sprouting up. Based on some of... (More)

Based on some of these recent projects and reports “1000 Extra” aims to further investigate possibilities around densifying residential areas. The project takes shape as a proposal to populate the roofs of the rows of carports that often act as the entrances to residential areas consisting of row houses. Taking action to increase housing availability where it is needed the most - rented appartments, not bought - the designed proposal consists of four appartments, on top of a row of eleven car ports. This cluster of appartments would be owned and leased out by the same people that own the car port, thus letting landlords and construction companies that operate on a small and com local level make decitsions concerning their own neighborhoods which hopefully leads to some elevated architectural qualities that creates value for the entire community of the neighborhood. Additionally the the two kitchens are shared between the neighboring appartments, perhaps bringing some negatives but allowing for much larger, functional and architecturally fun kitchens. The most important point of the shared kitchens however, is the contact between neighbors that might help lessen loneliness, a condition that seems to be on the rise in society at the moment. A significant amount of energy has been spent both on interior and exterior expression, as the site of the project is heavily influenced by both a historical railroad and buildings drawn by an excellent modernist architect named Ingeborg Hammarskjöd-Reiz. The project successfully operates as a vehichle for future discussion concerning densifying residential areas and solutions to the ongoing Swedish housing crisis. (Less)
