A climate adaptive development for Maashaven
(2023) ASBM01 20231Department of Architecture and Built Environment
- Abstract (Swedish)
- Climate change is posing a threat to the whole world. In some places, prolonged droughts cause problems whereas extreme rainfall causes problems elsewhere. Rotterdam faces increasing threats from the North Sea because of rising sea levels. The areas that are not protected by dikes are the most vulnerable and will be the first to flood.
This project focuses on an unprotected area of Rotterdam which is located along a harbour basin. The area houses almost solely industrial functions but it is an important location for future densification in the city. This is mainly because of its strong connectivity and its proximity to the city centre.

This is mainly because of its strong connectivity and its proximity to the city centre.
The main challenges in the site are to ensure safe and comfortable living in this environment surrounded by water for the future. In this project, I will look ahead to 100 years and will propose different solutions to the water problems that will arise by then. This while also taking into account other aspects of sustainable city design and living. (Less)
