An Explorative Analysis of The Effects of Age and Gender Identity On The Relationship Between Self-Compassion, Body Image and Sexual Satisfaction in The Swedish General Population

- Abstract
- Sexual satisfaction has been found to be closely connected to the overall life satisfaction of individuals, making it a public health issue. Most of the previous research has focused on physiological factors related to sexual satisfaction. However, evidence suggests that psychological factors are at play, and can act as protective factors against the decline in sexual satisfaction. This thesis will attempt to explore the psychological factors at play in detail and will explore the relationship between gender identity, age, self-compassion and body image on sexual satisfaction, a relationship that has not been examined before. Previous research suggests self-compassion may act as a protective factor against poor body image, subsequently... (More)
- Sexual satisfaction has been found to be closely connected to the overall life satisfaction of individuals, making it a public health issue. Most of the previous research has focused on physiological factors related to sexual satisfaction. This thesis will attempt to explore the psychological factors at play in detail and will explore the relationship between gender identity, age, self-compassion and body image on sexual satisfaction, a relationship that has not been examined before. Previous research suggests self-compassion may act as a protective factor against poor body image, subsequently affecting sexual satisfaction. In addition, age and gender identity have been found to be related to sexual satisfaction. Previous studies have not examined the relationship between self-compassion, body image, gender identity and age on sexual satisfaction regardless of the implications on public health. Because of the explorative nature of the study, path analysis was used. No support was found for either the protective effect of self-compassion against poor body image, and subsequent change in sexual satisfaction, nor the effect of age or gender identity on the relationship. The study did find age to affect sexual satisfaction and preliminary evidence for an indirect effect of age on sexual satisfaction through body image. Implications for sexual education and public health are discussed. (Less)
