Abstract
This study aims to provide an understanding of the reasoning and decision-making processes of Swedish newspapers in their work with push notifications. Hence the overarching research question is: how do Swedish newsrooms reason about the choice to spread certain news through push notifications? This study aims to provide an understanding of the reasoning and decision-making processes of Swedish newspapers in their work with push notifications. Hence the overarching research question is: how do Swedish newsrooms reason about the choice to spread certain news through push notifications? In order to answer this research question, seven semi-structured interviews with online editors, news editors and managing editors from three different newspapers (Svenska Dagbladet, Norrköpings Tidningar, Kristianstadsbladet/Norra Skåne) were conducted. The empirical material was then analyzed thematically using selected theories from the fields of editorial organization, news-values and digital media logic. The final analysis presents new knowledge regarding the decision-making processes behind push notifications in a Swedish newsroom context which helps fill an identified gap within the research field of digital journalism.
Based on the results, this study suggests that there is a shared mindset in Swedish newsrooms regarding which news-values are applied upon push notifications. This study further argues that the conditions of the audience together with organizational- as well as the journalist’s individual influence, play a pivotal role in the process of composing push notifications. There are also circumstances such as technological and source-related ones that impact the content and frequency of push notifications. In terms of the purposes served by push notifications, a fragmented view can be identified within the results. The respondents also had contrary views on the importance of being first with news through push notifications. (Less)
