Abstract
This study aimed to provide further understanding of how social workers use their own and client’s emotions in the relationship-based practice of social work. Further, we wanted to explore in which way social workers’ experiences of emotions can be understood as part of their professional practice. The participants of the study work in various parts of Sweden. The empirical material was analyzed using theoretical concepts such as emotional intelligence, emotional labor, deep- and surface-acting, and feeling rules. This study aimed to provide further understanding of how social workers use their own and client’s emotions in the relationship-based practice of social work. The study is based on a qualitative interview with eight social workers from several practices in social work, all with client-oriented work. The participants of the study work in various parts of Sweden. The empirical material was analyzed using theoretical concepts such as emotional intelligence, emotional labor, deep- and surface-acting, and feeling rules. The concept of emotional intelligence is used to understand how social workers’ comprehension of their own and others' emotions was used in their practice. This is discussed to how confirmation of clients' emotions improves relationship-based practice. Further, we used emotional labor about deep and surface acting to understand how social workers use and control their emotions in front of the client. Using the concept of feeling rules, the analysis of deep- and surface acting can be further discussed based on the social workers’ role as a professional. The results of the study indicate that social workers perceive emotions to be an important part in their work with clients. Emotions can be used as a form of knowledge to help the social workers relate to the client’s personal needs. Social workers describe their work with emotions as an instrument in relationship-based practice, where emotions can be further understood as an opportunity in emotional labor. However, the client’s emotions need to be visible for the work to be beneficial. Based on the professional role, emotions as knowledge becomes an aspect of professional practice. (Less)
