Abstract
This study has examined how young people in out-of-home care, specifically special youth homes in Sweden (SiS), describe their life situation and their ability to make their voices heard during care. We used a qualitative document analysis approach, collecting 40 stories from young persons in secure residential care from three different sources. To deepen our understanding, we used Erving Goffman´s ideal type of total institutions, which clarifies how closed institutions operate and how the environment of such units influences individuals living there. The main finding indicates that the life situations of young persons in closed residential care vary, despite several youths describing similar situations. However, the results also reveal... (More)
This study has examined how young people in out-of-home care, specifically special youth homes in Sweden (SiS), describe their life situation and their ability to make their voices heard during care. However, the results also reveal that self-determination is limited, and the individual's ability to be heard is restricted. It is not uncommon for a form of personality change to occur when a youth is placed within closed institutions. The study demonstrates that relationships between youth and staff play a crucial role in shaping the life situations of young persons in residential care. Within the institution, staff members hold a position of power, necessitating the establishment of positive relationships to contribute to a sense of security and an improved life situation. The voices of the young persons need great attention and should be taken seriously, as previous research has shown challenges in this regard. The study contributes to shedding light on various descriptions of life situations during closed residential care and underscores the importance of listening to the experiences of the youth. (Less)
