Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

Faktorer i Big Five fick
(Less)
Abstract
This study investigates the effects of social desirability on emotional
intelligence and its implications for the relationships and predictions
regarding Big Five personality factors. Since both constructs are often
estimated through self-report measures susceptible to social desirability,
this research aimed to examine whether the TEIQue-SF and parts of the
SSREIT measures of emotional intelligence are influenced by social
desirability. By using the methods from personality research such as
evaluatively neutralized personality scales and the evaluative factor, a
survey was constructed. 116 participants, mainly students, completed the
survey consisting of the TEIQue-SF, part of SSREIT as well as two
personality inventories, one... (More)

survey consisting of the TEIQue-SF, part of SSREIT as well as two
personality inventories, one evaluatively neutralized and one evaluative.
Relationships between emotional intelligence and personality were
examined through correlation analyses and regression analyses. The
results indicated significant moderate correlations between the evaluative
factor and emotional intelligence dimensions. Big Five factors also had a
larger predictive power on emotional intelligence with the evaluative
factor included. Correlations were smaller between emotional intelligence
and evaluatively neutralized personality scales than between emotional
intelligence and evaluative personality scales. In conclusion, these
findings indicate that personality and emotional intelligence are not as
strongly connected as previously believed, and that the examined measures
for emotional intelligence are contaminated by social desirability. Whether
this is something possible to elude is being discussed. (Less)
