Abstract
The amount of people in Sweden that studies on a higher level has increased a fair amount during the period 1990-2020. With a higher level of education, the graduates expect to be compensated for the time spent, with, for instance, a higher salary. Although during the same time studied, data and statistics show a negative trend regarding the profitability of the education, meaning that graduates receive less in salary for their education today, than in the 1990s. In this study, the aim is to investigate this question further and see if the profitability really is decreasing. The amount of people in Sweden that studies on a higher level has increased a fair amount during the period 1990-2020. Although during the same time studied, data and statistics show a negative trend regarding the profitability of the education, meaning that graduates receive less in salary for their education today, than in the 1990s. In this study, the aim is to investigate this question further and see if the profitability really is decreasing. To get a more in-depth understanding of the situation, the question will be analysed in different aspects. First a general analysis will be done, to see if there is a negative trend. Second, the data will be separated on ten different professions, to see if different type of work is affected differently. The general result, as well as the results divided on professions will also be analysed when separated on gender, to see if there is a distinction between women and men. Using the data, the question will be analysed over time, divided into three periods, 1990 – 2000, 2001 – 2010 and 2011 – 2019. The conclusion of the analysis is that there is generally a negative trend in the profitability, both for the analysis done only separated on gender, and the one separated on professions. Although the trend seems do be negative, the results is still positive in the way that it is still profitable to study on a higher level, although not as beneficial as in the 1990s. (Less)
