(Less)

Research question: How does an organization maintain strategic consistency as the environment sets new demands on the business operations?
Purpose: The study aims to create understanding for how strategic decisions are affected by expectations from stakeholders by exploring how a real estate company handled the expectations that arised during the Covid-19 pandemic in relation to the business operations.
Methodology: Through a qualitative interview study, empirical findings were collected from four employees of the company. In addition four customers of the company were interviewed to get a view of the stakeholders perspective. The study has a constructionist and abductive approach.
Theoretical perspectives: The two theoretical fields that lie at the foundation of the study are the process and analytical perspective on strategy and the stakeholder model.
Result: From the interviews, the real estate company was expected to fill five roles. They were “clean-up crew”, “hospital and police”, “party planner”, “psychologist” and “workplace”. How the foundation were obliged to maintain their purpose and therefore keep their core operations was also analyzed.
Conclusions: The study presents a unique case showcasing an exception to the basic assumption in strategic theories about how businesses can and want to change. The comparison with a draft shows how hard it can be for a business to maintain their strategy and how social responsibility can go from voluntary to an expectation. (Less)
