Abstract
This text aims to study the processes that took place between the Church of Sweden and the state between the years 1995-2000, when the Church of Sweden’s parishes continued to be responsible for maintaining cemeteries. Through an empirical research method a committee directive, an official report by the government, a government bill, a report from the constitutional committee and the motions that were laid in the process are analysed. The paper aims to answer: (1) How are claims to justice in relation to the burial sites articulated by the various actors and (2) how does the structure of cemetery maintenance affect actors at different levels: the state, religious organisations, members and non-members of the Church of Sweden? The understanding of religious freedom between those who are positive and those who are negative to the proposal differentiates. The remaining relationship between the state and the Church of Sweden is different than between the state and other religious organisations. The relational change meant that the Church of Sweden has gained an indisputable place in society regardless of society's development. It risks reproducing a hierarchy in which members of the Church of Sweden are invited to influence in the general and non-members in the particular. (Less)
