Abstract (Swedish)
Danielsson, F. 2023. Rya gamla kyrka: A study about the relation between landscape and church in Rya parish.
Medieval churches have been a key part of the research field of historical archaeology in Lund since its beginning. In recent years there have been an increasing interest in studying the relationship between early church construction and the landscape in which they were formed.
This study aims to try and apply previously developed theories about this relationship on the less often used subject matter of medieval churches in the north of Scania.
The essay’s purpose is to discern how the north Scanian landscape affected the construction of the medieval church in Rya parish and how this affected the shape and materiality of the church. To accomplish this the author makes use of what written source material is available concerning the church, historical maps, field studies and a database created by Barbro Sundnér that contains, among other things, information about what types of material have been used in the church building.
The study results in the conclusion that the original church in Rya parish lacks many of the criteria that would be able to place it in an aristocratic context. Instead, the church seems to have been conceived in a dynamic process where both the local population and other actors have had something to gain. Furthermore, the church building has been affected by the local landscape in several ways and in return has affected the landscape. The church is relatively small and has been placed centrally in relation to earlier human activity in the parish area. In turn the church has cemented human activity to the southwestern parts of the parish and has changed how the local population in Rya organised their farms spatially in relation to the church.
