Abstract
The study aims to investigate how the Indian state securitizes and legitimizes their actions in Jammu and Kashmir. In 2019, the state intensified its control over the area while revoking Article 370, a legislation that granted Jammu and Kashmir limited autonomy. These actions have been criticized for human rights violations. Concurrently, the state implemented legislation to protect transgender rights in 2019, and further abolished the legislation prohibiting homosexuality in 2018. Therefore, the study further examines whether pinkwashing and homonationalism are part of the state’s securitization and legitimization strategies. The material includes official government statements from the website Press Information Bureau. The study applies... (More)

The study applies Buzan et al.’s securitization theory and Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis, as the methodological tool. Findings reveal three central strategies from the state: illustrating their actions as counterterrorism measures, selective statements and positive portrayals of the revoking of Article 370. Two additional strategies have been identified: claims of being targeted by a propaganda campaign and commendation to the Prime Minister Modi and his government. Through a comprehensive analysis of the material, there is indication of pinkwashing and homonationalism as a part of the state’s securitization and legitimization strategy. An example illustrating the strategies is the statements of the implementation of the legislative for transgender rights, that indicate pinkwashing and homonationalism. (Less)
