- Abstract
- This thesis investigates the rhetoric of populist leaders during the Covid-19 pandemic. By examining statements from three different presidents, Brazil's Jair Bolsonaro, Mexico´s Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and Nicaragua´s Daniel Ortega and explores whether they used rhetoric that downplayed the threat of COVID-19. Through a qualitative content analysis, the rhetoric of these presidents is examined from two different newspapers and linked to Foucault's theoretical perspective, the phenomenon of rally around the flag, and whether their rhetoric can be connected to the core tenets of populist ideology, which pits the virtuous people against the corrupt elite. are compared to provide insight into the rhetoric of populist leaders. - This thesis investigates the rhetoric of populist leaders during the Covid-19 pandemic. By examining statements from three different presidents, Brazil's Jair Bolsonaro, Mexico´s Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and Nicaragua´s Daniel Ortega and explores whether they used rhetoric that downplayed the threat of COVID-19. There are some findings in this study that shows that the different populist leaders used rhetoric that if not downplayed the virus deflected the conversation to consequences from the threat on people's lives. This study also found that even if the populist core tenets of the corrupt elite are found within the rhetoric of the leaders, not all put themselves as one of the people. (Less)
