- Abstract
- Sametinget, the Sami parliament, was established 1993 as a way to increase the cultural autonomy of the Sami people in Sweden. Through its double sided role as both parliament and official authority, together with being mainly based upon Western political governing structures, criticism has been raised against Sametinget as a limited way of achieving Sami self-determination. According to the theory of ontological self-determination, the need to incorporate one’s own ontological position - in the case of the Sami: a relational ontology - has been raised as a necessary condition for true self-determination to work. Thus, the aim of this paper is to investigate the political structure of the Sami parliament in relation to ontological... (More)
- Sametinget, the Sami parliament, was established 1993 as a way to increase the cultural autonomy of the Sami people in Sweden. Thus, the aim of this paper is to investigate the political structure of the Sami parliament in relation to ontological self-determination. Using a combination of investigative analysis and idea analysis, relational ontology will be used as the point of comparison. The investigation will focus on how well this idea, operationalised into four categories of a relational understanding of nature, land, knowledge and language, can be incorporated in the current political structure of the Sami parliament. The findings of this essay is that the political structure of the Sami Parliament to a great extent limits the possibilities of incorporating a relational ontology in its governance. There are some aspects that are well compatible with a relational ontology like the liberty to formulate the goals for, and leading the sami politics of culture and language, and the liberty to create political committees in the parliament. However, owing to the fact that there is a clear division between the political power of the Sami parliament in questions concerning culture compared to nature/land, a relational ontology can never truly be incorporated.
