- Abstract (Swedish)
- Given the urgent need to address climate change, it is critical to confront fossil fuel dependency, particularly in the Global North. How fossil fuels are spatially perceived by citizens must be considered to better recognize the ways in which petro-dependency has become embedded in urban spaces. This is imperative to understanding spatio-cultural challenges of implementing green energy transitions. Theoretically, this thesis builds on concepts from energy geographies and petroleumscapes. Centered on Stavanger, Norway’s oil capital, it analyzes how petroleum extraction has produced a particular social-ecological space. Through novel methodologies, this thesis visualizes perceived spatialities of petroleum. Empirically, it demonstrates... (More)

Centered on Stavanger, Norway’s oil capital, it analyzes how petroleum extraction has produced a particular social-ecological space. Through novel methodologies, this thesis visualizes perceived spatialities of petroleum. Empirically, it demonstrates petroleum’s social production of space through its funding of public goods, leading to feelings of petro-sedation among citizens. Furthermore, petroleum creates social inequalities, experienced spatially through unequal housing patterns. These insights contribute to uncovering the obscured, yet all-encompassing influences of petroleum on social-ecological spaces. (Less)
