Abstract
In this paper, we explore the practices independent artists use on social media. We address topics such as the democratization of the music industry and marketing on social media platforms. To gain a comprehensive understanding of these practices, we interviewed four independent artists. We also analyzed the artist's Instagram accounts using a lurking approach. Our focus will not lie on the consumers perception or the direct marketing results. Instead, this study aims to understand the practices of independent artists on social media. We seek to illustrate the deeper dimensions of digital presence. By analyzing independent artists behaviors and practices on social media, we deem to reveal the complex dynamics of identity, community and... (More)

Our focus will not lie on the consumers perception or the direct marketing results. Instead, this study aims to understand the practices of independent artists on social media. We seek to illustrate the deeper dimensions of digital presence. By analyzing independent artists behaviors and practices on social media, we deem to reveal the complex dynamics of identity, community and self expression. The independent artists use social media in different ways to reach certain goals. The use of humor and memes on their social media platforms creates community and levity, which can be very important to build up their social capital at the beginning of their career. What we noticed from the lurking was also that humor and the use of memes took up larger parts of the artist's feed, but got less relevant through time. We believe that has to do with some form of defense mechanism as an artist/band. Because in the beginning no one wanted to be taken too seriously by their surroundings. This was a recurring theme in our interviews. However, as the artist becomes more serious about their music, the presence of jokes, memes and similar content decreases in their social media feeds.
