Abstract
The purpose of this master's thesis is to study how the public library can contribute to the transition into a more sustainable, resilient society. Through the phenomenon of the seed library, this thesis examines the library's ability to engage and communicate with the local community about environmental and climate related issues. The following questions were addressed: (1) Which functions can the seed library have at Swedish public libraries? (2) How do librarians see the seed library as a part of the work with environmental and climate issues? (3) How can the seed library contribute to the environmental and climate transition in the local community? The empirical data was gathered through interviews with library staff from eight... (More)
The purpose of this master's thesis is to study how the public library can contribute to the transition into a more sustainable, resilient society. The following questions were addressed: (1) Which functions can the seed library have at Swedish public libraries? (2) How do librarians see the seed library as a part of the work with environmental and climate issues? (3) How can the seed library contribute to the environmental and climate transition in the local community? The empirical data was gathered through interviews with library staff from eight different public libraries that all run a seed library. The material was then thematically analysed from two theoretical points of departure: a sustainability model and the library as social infrastructure. The results show that the seed library is a resourceful way to contribute to both the library and the surrounding local community. The seed library brings new audiences to the library, and provides an arena for connections between individual users as well as between users and library staff, whose objectives often derive from personal interest in environmental issues. The seed library has potential to function as a practical entryway to environmental education and other activities relating to a wide range of environmental issues, such as biodiversity, food security, climate change, and the vital importance of pollinators. The library thus becomes a proactive agent of change. (Less)
