- The purpose of this master´s thesis is to show what languages can be offered by employees at archives in Sweden, and to create knowledge about how language can contribute to the relationship between the archive and the user. This thesis studies language use in Swedish archives by using a questionnaire survey with questions about verbal language, preserved language, and digital language. The survey was answered by 67 respondents, representing 29 archives, 17 of which were public archives, and 12 were private.
The role of language in relation to the archival system is an under-researched topic. The role of language in relation to the archival system is an under-researched topic. This thesis therefore leans against previous research in library and information science, linguistics, and psychology. The results of this thesis are also analyzed using a sociological perspective with a focus on the concepts of power, identity, and affinity.
The results show that 12 languages were represented among employees of the 29 archives included in the study, although not all 12 languages could be spoken fluently. Neither Arabic, which is the second largest language in Sweden, nor any of Sweden's minority languages, were represented among the respondents. Furthermore, the results show that there are differences between public and private archives in how they use language in digital platforms, as well as in whether they preserve material in a language other than Swedish.
Throughout this master thesis, identity, language, and cultural heritage are linked. Language can be used as a toolbox to strengthen the relationship between the archive and the user, strengthening feelings of affinity, respect, welcomeness, accessibility, and inclusion. (Less)
