Abstract
The title of my master’s thesis is “to sail through the room”, and it deals with museum ships as a space rather than as an object. Meaning that museum ships are seen as spaces in which events and experiences can occur, opposed to things that events and experience happen to or around. Little museological research on museum ships has been done, and no research at all has been done concerning the specific ships that my study touches, hence why I have chosen the subject. The ships I have chosen to study are HMS Västervik and HMS Bremön at Marinmuseum in Karlskrona, which are both metal-type war ships that have been repurposed into museum ships. Both ships are on the water and not landlocked.

The thesis deals with the following scientific problem; “how does the spatiality of the museum ships affect the visitors’ movements through the space and their general experience of the museum ship?” It consists of ethnographic walk-alongs, where I look at how three different people walk through the two museum ships, how they interact with their surroundings, and their own thoughts about their experiences. My theoretical approach has been a spatiality theory, which can be summarized as the interactions between the material space, the designed space, and the lived space, that all come together to form one experience of a space.

The conclusions that can be drawn from the study is that the visitors are very conscious of the space around them on the museum ships and move very deliberately. This is due to the three following factors: 1) the own body’s abilities and limitations. 2) the spatiality of the museum ships, how they’re designed, and how the museum itself has dealt with the available space, and 3) the visitors’ image and expectations of what a museum ship is. The visitors see the museum ship as an object of historical value and not as an extension of the museum building.

There is also large issue concerning accessibility for people with disabilities which is not particularly easy to solve. Visitors with disabilities seem to have a great understanding of this issue and the difficulties museums face in handling it, which is due to disabled persons general experiences of societal restrictions that make them “used to” being shut out from or excluded from many experiences.
