Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
Abstract
The aim of this study was to explore which factors psychotherapists´ believe
influence their choice of theory, model and techniques in their practical work
and how psychotherapists experience their choice of therapeutic tools is adapted
to clients’ situations and needs. Seven semi-structured interviews were
conducted, six certified psychotherapists and one psychotherapist student
participated. The interview material was analyzed using Interpretative
Phenomenological Analysis, which led to identification of four main themes:

Congruence, Responsibility, Context and Flexibility. The results showed that the
practical and theoretical knowledge needs to be allowed to marry with the
individual practitioner´s basic personality, in a way that allows the
psychotherapist to experience being himself at the same time as being
professional. When professional and personal identity lands in with the
psychotherapist and security is created in their own professional style, space is
given for flexibility and to use methods and techniques. The study showed that
there was a collective consciousness, habitus, among the psychotherapists based
on training, supervision and collegial discussions that form a mutual language.
The psychotherapists showed a consensus that, as professionals, they need room
for action in their work context, they also see a need to be able to design their
work process themselves. In that, permissive and supportive organizations are
an important factor, as is access to colleagues and networks. The psychotherapist
constantly walks an invisible line between being an expert and taking a “not
knowing position” to match clients and their needs. The study´s interview
material brought forward common keywords for psychotherapists clinical work,
such as curiosity, presence and a co-creation with client in order to do good
therapy. (Less)
