- Abstract
- As a new type of rapid transportation, high-speed railway played an essential role in China's economic development in the 21st century. In order to meet the transport demand and provide convenience for economic development, China has started a large-scale high-speed railway construction since 2004. Until now most cities in China have opened high-speed railway stations. Based on this background, this study will discuss the effect of high-speed railway on the economy.

A total of 4234 samples from Chinese cities from 2003 to 2019 were obtained firstly except provincial capitals and municipalities directly under the Central Government. Then, this paper studies the impact of high-speed railway on GDP per capita, and conducts parallel trend test, heterogeneity test, placebo test and robustness test.
The baseline regression shows that the opening of high-speed rail stations has a positive effect on the GDP per capita significantly. According to the heterogeneity test result, the opening of high-speed rail station has more effect in cities with smaller populations and those cities located in coastal provinces. The result of the parallel trend test shows that there is a significant difference between the control group and the control group after the opening of the HSR station. Both the placebo test and the robustness test pass. (Less)
