Abstract
In Hyllie, Malmö, a new neighborhood by the name Embassy of Sharing is being
built. This neighborhood markets itself as a neighborhood of the sharing economy.
The Embassy of Sharing will contain housing, office spaces, boutiques, restaurants
and also a new municipal branch library. In the media the municipal branch library
has been used as a symbol for the sharing economy to market the quarter. The
purpose of this essay is to contribute to an understanding of the library's positioning
within the Embassy of Sharing. I also intend to explore the library's symbolic role
and how it can affect the library's legitimacy. This will be done by examining the

and how it can affect the library's legitimacy. This will be done by examining the
empirical material to find out what library-related discourses will be visible. The
empirical material was gathered in two ways 1) selection of news articles and
internal documents discussing the library in the Embassy of Sharing and 2)
qualitative interviews with representatives from Malmö City and Granitor
Properties. The theoretical framework consists of discourse analysis and culture
analysis. The method of analysis is a model containing these four steps: 1)
designations, 2) themes, 3) subject positions and 4) discourses. My analysis shows
that two new library-related discourses could be found in the material regarding the
library in Hyllie: The socially useful discourse and The participation discourse. The
socially useful discourse seems to be the most prominent discourse. In the
conclusion I argue that the library’s legitimacy is both positively and negatively
affected by being a symbol of the Embassy of Sharing. (Less)
