Abstract
By taking a starting point in the climate action, implemented by the climate activist group Återställ Våtmarker, in the summer of 2023 at Nationalmuseum in Stockholm this thesis explores the topic of climate activism and climate actions set within the museum room. The purpose of the study is to gain a deeper understanding of climate activism and climate actions in museums by gathering knowledge on why climate activists carry out these actions and how the museum world in turn chooses to respond to them. This will be achieved by examining the topic from two perspectives, that of the museum world and that of the activists that carry out the actions. The research has been conducted by interviewing museum staff from three large art museums with... (More)

The research has been conducted by interviewing museum staff from three large art museums with connections to climate activism in different manners, as art museums have been the main target for these types of actions. To cover the second perspective interviews have also been conducted with two activists from different climate groups with connections to the museum sector.

The theoretical framework used for this master's thesis is a combination of institutional theory and participatory theory. By using the concepts trends, reformations, and isomorphism, provided by Ulla Eriksson-Zetterquist’s understanding of institutional theory, I aim to explain the different ways in which climate activism can affect museums and contribute to change within the organisations. Participatory theory, on the other hand, will be used to explore the possibilities museums have to include these activist groups as external partners into their projects and use it as a possibility to improve their operations.
