Abstract
University libraries have an important mission to support researchers in their work. Among researchers the PhD student is in a special position. They are in a process of transitioning from being students to becoming researchers. To properly support PhD students, it is important that the support is relevant to the group. The aim of this study is to increase the knowledge of how librarians and PhD students relate to and perceive research support, using Malmö University’s library as the point of departure.

The aim of this study is to increase the knowledge of how librarians and PhD students relate to and perceive research support, using Malmö University’s library as the point of departure.

The study is empirically based on 14 semi-structured interviews with librarians and PhD students and three observations of three different instances of research support. The analysis with its focus on practices three different dimensions was largely inspired by Stephen Kemmis’ practice-theoretical framework.

The results show that the librarians have an expressed focus on the PhD students and their perceived needs, based on the students' context in the university and their growing role in the scientific community. The PhD students know of and use the support services to varying degrees. Most of the interviewees that had used the support found that it matched or went above their expectations. The students who had not used it either didn’t know of it, did not find it relevant, or were planning to use it in the future. The academic supervisor was identified as a central figure, both to the librarians’ and the PhD students’ practices. Some of the main challenges in creating a shared perspective of the research support, which in turn could be incorporated into the students’ information practices, was identifying and matching needs, becoming a part of the students’ social and material research context and creating an institutional awareness.

The findings primarily have implications for librarians and the library in their mission to become a more prominent part in supporting the PhD students' journey from student to scholar. By extension the findings might also have implications for future PhD students and their information practices. (Less)
